Matcha green tea is a finely ground powder that’s been prepared in Asia for over 1000 years. The methods for making hot matcha tea are bit different than what you may be used to. Let’s explore the best way to make matcha green tea.

Using Matcha Whisk

Modern matcha whisk
Modern Matcha Whisk & Chasen Alternative
  1. Sift or dry whisk the Matcha without any water to remove any lumps
  2. Scoop 1 teaspoon of Matcha (2g) into a coffee or tea mug
  3. Pour 70ml (2.46fl oz) of 176F (80C) hot water into your mug
  4. Using a matcha whisk, whisk the Matcha until you get a thick, foamy froth
  5. If using a traditional chasen whisk: Move the matcha whisk in short, fast jerks as if you were writing the letter “W” (not a circular motion)
  6. If using a modern matcha whisk: Place the matcha whisk in the mug, push down and release continuously to froth your matcha
  7. Fill the rest of the mug with hot water and enjoy!

For the best flavor drink it up within the next 3 minutes before the Matcha powder has a chance to settle at the bottom of your mug. Whisk and drink it right away, when it is fresh and covered in foam, and you won’t regret it.

Without a Matcha Whisk

If you don’t have a matcha whisk you can still make it happen, here’s how:

  1. Sift or dry whisk the Matcha without any water to remove any lumps
  2. Scoop 1 teaspoon of Matcha (2g) into a ball jar or hot water safe bottle with an airtight lid
  3. Pour 70ml (2.46fl oz) of 176F (80C) hot water into the jar or bottle and tighten the lid
  4. Shake it up until it’s good and frothy inside
  5. Pour the frothy mixture into a coffee or tea mug, and then fill the rest of the mug with hot water

The ball jar approach won’t work quite a well, but it does the job in a pinch.

Iced Matcha on The Go

If you don’t have a matcha whisk you can still make it happen, here’s how:

  1. Fill a clean water bottle 3/4 of the way full with cold filtered water
  2. Scoop 1 teaspoon of Matcha (2g) into the water bottle
  3. Screw the water bottle cap on tight and shake it up good!

This is a great way to enjoy your matcha on the go, it’s what I do on my morning commute everyday. If you’re in a rush you can use this approach with a plastic disposable water bottle as well. The best part about this approach is that you can continuously re-shake up the matcha as it begins to settle.
